What is Self Assessment?+
Self Assessment is HMRC's system for reporting income, gains and other taxable or untaxed income. It's typically used by sole traders, the self-employed and individuals with income from sources other than employment. Returns are filed annually and must be accurate.
Who needs to file a Self Assessment tax return?+
You'll usually need to file if you're self-employed, a company director with income not taxed under PAYE, a partner in a business partnership, or if you have income from property, capital gains, foreign income over £300, income over £150,000, or £2,500 or more from untaxed savings and investments, among other circumstances.
What's included in the £119 package?+
Review of your income and expenses, the tax computation, preparation of your SA100 return, an allowance and relief check, online filing with HMRC, and digital filing confirmation. It applies to straightforward returns with complete records.
What information will I need to provide?+
Details of self-employed earnings, P60s or P45s, dividends, interest, partnership profits, rental income, foreign income, pension contributions, Gift Aid, benefits received, and any capital gains from shares, crypto or property - whichever apply to you.
How long will the work take?+
Once your details and records are received, returns are typically prepared and ready for your review within 2 working days.
Do I approve the return before it's filed?+
Yes. You'll review the computations your accountant has prepared and approve them before anything is submitted to HMRC.
When is the Self Assessment deadline?+
Online returns are due by 31 January following the end of the relevant tax year. Filing after this date triggers an immediate £100 penalty.
What's the difference between the two packages?+
Both packages include full preparation, review and filing with HMRC. The £199 package adds a 40-minute consultation call with your accountant to talk through your position before it's submitted.
Can I amend my return after submitting it?+
Yes - you have up to a year after the filing deadline to amend online via HMRC's portal. After that, you'll need to write to HMRC directly to request a change.
